At around 17:45 Beijing time on October 4th, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was announced. The winners were Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Bruce, and Alexey I. Ekimov, in recognition of their contributions to the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. This achievement is a model of the combination of nanotechnology and quantum mechanics, and its application has further improved people's production, life, and medical diagnosis and treatment levels.

What is a quantum dot?
Quantum dots (QDs) are a type of semiconductor nanocrystals with sizes smaller than or close to the Bohr radius, exhibiting quantum effects. Its diameter generally ranges from 1 to 10 nm. According to the official description of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in terms of size, its ratio to the football is equivalent to the ratio of the football to the Earth. As a new generation of fluorescent materials, the fluorescence intensity of quantum dots is 60 times that of ordinary fluorescein. Based on its unique physicochemical and optical properties, quantum dots have been widely used in disease diagnosis, drug screening, drug delivery, gene transfection, detection imaging, and disease disappearance.

Quantum dot properties
The most prominent optical property of quantum dots is that after being excited, they emit high-quality monochromatic light of different colors. The specific color of light is not determined by its chemical composition, but is closely related to the size of nanoparticles: when the size is relatively large, the color of light tends to be reddish; As the size decreases, the color of the light will shift towards blue.

Quantum dots also exhibit excellent optical properties such as wide excitation spectra, narrow and symmetrical emission spectra, large Stokes shifts, and resistance to photobleaching.

The application of quantum dots in the field of medical diagnosis
At the end of the last century, quantum dots were first used as biofluorescence labels and successfully applied to live cell systems, solving the problems of their water solubility and biocompatibility. From then on, the biomedical application of quantum dots became possible, and their research quickly became a hot field.
